Fihunu Mas

 

You can use this recipe for any type of fish you want to bake. The spice mixture is enough to generously cover 300 grams of fish, so all you have to do is adjust the ingredients according to the size of your fish.

In this recipe, we cut our fish into chunks and then baked them in the oven. But you can use it for baking a whole fish or baking over BBQ by simply adjusting the cook time accordingly.

Serves: 2-3

Ingredients:

  • 1 small onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 inch thin slice of ginger
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp. grated coconut
  • 1 tsp. cumin powder
  • 1 ½ tsp. red chilli powder
  • ½ tsp. whole black peppercorns
  • ½ tsp. salt (for the spice paste)
  • 5 tbsp. water
  • 300 grams fish
  • ¼ tsp. salt (for the fish)

 

Instructions:

  1. Add everything except for the fish and the salt for the fish to your grinder and grind to a smooth paste.
  2. Cut the fish into roughly 2 inch chunks and make a slit down the middle of every chunk so that you can stuff the spice paste in there. Add ¼ tsp. salt to the fish and give it a mix so that the salt is well incorporated into the fish.
  3. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celcius.
  4. Coat the fish chunks with the spice paste. Stuff a bit of paste into the slits you made on the fish chunks. 
  5. Arrange the fish chunks on a baking tray. You can cover the tray with foil before you place the fish for easy cleaning.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the fish is cooked and looks reddish with little brown bits on top.
