So, have you tried making yourself a Dalgona coffee yet?
The photogenic drink that’s gone viral (yeah, it feels weird saying viral these days) on social media is actually named after a Korean toffee candy. According to Wikipedia, the coffee was made popular by South Korean actor Jung II-woo who first tasted it while at an eatery in Macau. He thought it tasted like a type of Korean honeycomb toffee called ‘dalgona.’ He then later on went on to present it at a South Korean TV show called Stars' Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant.
Soon, homemade versions of the coffee were being shared on South Korean YouTube channels and it Tik-Tok. And yes, alongside came the covid 19 pandemic and social distancing, and sharing photos of beautifully homemade dalgona coffee became a real thing.
So how is it made? It’s really simple; sugar, hot water and instant coffee are all you need. For a single serving we recommend 2 tablespoons instant coffee, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon water. You just have to whip them together, until its light brown and fluffy. You can use an electric hand-held mixer for this or just brave it and whip it by hand using a spoon.
When you are done with the whipping, place it on top of milk, hot or cold does not matter but we do like cold better, and take a really good picture. Share your creation with the world and enjoy a lovely cup of milk coffee.
