Alright, listen up peeps. Lunch is serious business and if you want to maintain your productivity-levels post break, you have to invest in the good stuff. And that’s why I’m at Maagiri’s Faru restaurant checking out their cool nibbles, their express lunch. I’m told they do it from 12pm to 3pm so that gives you an adequate window. Plus, they told me to tell you they have haveeru sai afterwards, just in case you miss out on lunch. How very kind of these people.
Anyhow, express lunch isn’t that pricey, if you want to go price first. Plus, you get iced tea along with your meal. It’s 116MVR per person in total for the lunch pack.
The restaurant is on the second floor of the hotel though the view might not be worth writing home about as it overlooks the Hulhumale Ferry Terminal. The entire restaurant is smoke-free so you don’t have to worry about passive smoking or unsavoury types loitering long after their Red Bulls are done.
So, what’s on the menu? There are tuna mashuni wraps, chicken wraps, spicy chicken burgers, tuna fried rice and chili con carne. Not bad as far as variety is concerned, and some of it’s not too heavy on the stomach either. My friend picks the burger and I go with the chicken wrap.
First up, our drinks. Now, iced tea isn’t really hard to do well, I’ve tried it at home. Where people mess up most commonly, though, is the ratio of lemon to tea. And that’s the case here as well. I can’t taste the tea for the damned lemon. But if you consider it a strange breed of lemonade, you can be placated somewhat I suppose.
Now for the mains, which arrive well under twenty minutes. The burger first, since I know you guys love burgers. It’s actually pretty OK size-wise, and easy to eat, so you won’t have to worry about the mess while digging your teeth into this baby. The bun is pretty solid with sesame seeds and a fair bit of crispness, and the chicken inside is succulent. A very, very healthy patty. And the chips on the side are kind of cute and inventive; they’re not potato but deep-fried strips of roshi. Mmmmm. The small fruit platter is thoughtful, you get papaya, banana, watermelon. The salad’s OK; julienned carrot and cucumber and a couple of other veggies.
And the chicken wrap is quite the treat. Morsels of chicken with black pepper and bell peppers wrapped up and served with a nice little salad and a side of fruits. I have no complaints. And don’t think I’m not writing more because it’s deficient in some way because it isn’t; it’s really very good.
Some exciting things are lined up for the future, they tell me. They have plans to introduce sushi into the mix; which I believe some of you will be really happy about. Deliveries will be starting soon too and they’re going to try to keep time taken at a minimum. This will doubtless be glad tidings for those of us who need a break from cooking on occasion. So, yeah, come to Faru if you feel like forking out 232 per couple for a quick and decent lunch. And most importantly, lunch that doesn’t put you in a food coma. Yep, methinks you won’t be disappointed.
