Yesterday was an exciting day for us. We visited a youth food festival held at the Social Centre in Male’.
The one-day festival was called ‘Zuvaanunge Malaafaiy,’ and for a festival that was supposed to be a youth thing, we thought the name sounded rather old. With that being said, what we loved about it was the assortment of food there. There were waffles, there were coconut balls, and there was coffee and lots and lots of cake.
Some sticker badges were handed to us as we entered the festival. Right in front of us was an area designated for eating, with benches, chairs, tables and some joali, and surrounding the eating area were the various food stalls. There was live music as well, right in the middle of the area designated for eating.
The event organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports took place inside the centre’s hall. So it was sort of humid and loud. The eating area was packed as well. So we strolled around, tasting things and taking pictures.
There was a stall from Modus Operandi, the relative newcomer to Maldives’ still fresh specialty coffee scene, and The Space, an upcoming café were selling their wraps from their stall. There were stalls from online bakeries such as Hawwan cakes, Bakes by Fira and Brownilicious as well.
Among the things we tasted were some cute and delicious cookies from Sugar Fairies and a very interesting valhoamas bread with a kulhimas dip from Little Wonders.
The place actually was filled with youthful foodies and their stalls, and we though that was refreshing. We hope more of these do take place in the future, and also wish that some of them would take place somewhere open so that we can enjoy a breeze along with the food. We definitely should have stayed longer and enjoyed more food, but here’s to the next time.
