The Great British Bake Off

Category: TV Shows

Here’s something to watch if you like looking at scrumptious sweet things being baked. An episode of The Great British Bake Off typically kicks off with the presenters enthusiastically yelling out the phrase ‘on your marks, get set, bake!’ and what follows is always a series of good looking food, great humor and funny mishaps.

The Great British Bake Off is a British television baking competition that started off in 2010. To date there are seven seasons, and over the years the show has undergone many changes including changes to hosts and judges. Even the name of the show was later changed to The Great British Baking Show.

We believe the first few seasons are the best ones, especially the season one. The presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins bring a whole lot of heartwarming humor to the table. Mary Berry, the author of over sixty cookbooks and probably the nicest person on television ever, judges the competition alongside English celebrity chef Paul Hollywood.

The latter seasons are presented by Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding, and when Mary Berry left the show; restaurateur, cookery writer and novelist Prue Leith took her place.

The show follows a weekly elimination format. Every episode has a theme and is divided into three parts; the signature challenge, the technical challenge and the show stopper. In the signature challenge, the contesting amateur bakers are required to come up with something that shows their personality. Their baking skills are tested in the technical challenge segment, and in the showstopper segment, contestants are required to make something elaborate and spectacular. The weakest baker is eliminated at the end of every episode.

There is actually a lot of baking on the show, which means you’ll get to pick up a lot of tips and tricks along the way. They make breads, cakes, pastries, tarts, and puddings among other things. Every episode also includes an informative and also fun history segment focused on the episode’s theme.

The show is also really cute. Think rose bushes, beautifully painted kitchen cabinets, lush English landscapes, and animal appearances that include sheep, ducks and swans.
